The BaoBao Foundation Board came together during the summer of 2014 to bring several separate initiatives together under one roof. Here are a glimpse of our different projects and initiatives :
- BaoBao Festival was started in 2004 by Adjei Abankwah. As a former member of the Ghana National Dance Ensemble for 11 years Adjei founded the Festival as a way to bring the culture, stories, dances and songs of West Africa to communities across the Front Range. BaoBao Festival brings talented professional artists to Colorado each March for several events that take place in theaters, libraries and schools.
- The BaoBao Library Project began in 2011 with the idea to convert a vacant piece of land in the community where Adjei's family resides, into a library and computer lab. Since then we have raised over $40,000, collected thousands of books and constructed the library building. We opened the library during the summer of 2017!
- Travel to Ghana Visit Ghana and experience the culture first hand. Discovering Ghana with BaoBao Travel will allow you to experience Ghana in a very authentic way through home stay, eating amazing local dishes, learning drum rhythms, taking dance classes at the University of Ghana, and volunteering for the BaoBao Library Project.
- Mokomba Ensemble is a Boulder based performance group presenting traditional and contemporary works of African drum and dance from countries across the African continent. Members of the group are from the United States, Ghana, Haiti and Japan. This vibrant group performs at events throughout the year.
- Educational Outreach is a huge part of BaoBao Foundation's work. We want people to get to know Ghana and West Africa. We want people to be aware of the richness of West African culture, to know its countries, its culture, its art, its people, its history. From this, we hope to build a community of people here in Colorado who connect through this common interest.
